STOCKTON, CA - There isn't a lot of extra space for first graders at Great Valley Elementary School in Stockton these first few days of school.
That's because three classes have more than 40 students in them, after 15 teachers at the school were laid-off due to budget cuts.
Principal Pat Boutte expected the overcrowded conditions to be fixed soon.
"This will be resolved by tomorrow. Based on the enrollment, we'll be adding a teacher. So tomorrow those students will be put in another class and the average will be about 30," said Boutte.
Although Great Valley is in Stockton's Weston Ranch neighborhood, it's part of the Manteca Unified School District.
