DAVIS, CA - University of California at Davis officials on Monday announced the start of construction of multiple-use, renewable energy-friendly West Village on the west side of campus.
The $280-million planned community will extend out from a retail village square to affordable faculty housing and student housing. The various amenities will be linked by open spaces and pedestrian and bicycles paths.
Up to 343 homes priced below market-value for faculty and staff will be built in phase one. A UC Davis spokeswoman said a lottery will be held to determine who will be able to purchase a home in the first phase.
Apartments for 2,000 students are also part of the first phase.
Also slated for phase one: the Davis Center of the Los Rios Community College District and a small daycare facility.
The first phase of West Village is targeted for opening in fall, 2011.
When complete, West Village will encompass about 200 acres. There will be housing for an estimated 4,350 people: 475 new homes for faculty and staff and housing for 3,000 students.
