MARYSVILLE, CA - Investigators from Marysville are trying to put together the evidence leading to the murder of a 19-year-old homecoming queen from Indiana. The evidence so far points to the girls fiancee, Ian Sloan York, 21, an airman from Beale Air Force Base.
On Saturday York fled to the Bay Area where Santa Clara police officers spotted him a day later. Officers said York fired at them, a shootout followed and York was killed.
The revelation that a military man would be responsible for these kinds of crimes stunned the community as well as the family of the murder victim, Kelly Roome.
"He's supposed to protect and serve our country. But instead, he kills my daughter. An innocent victim," said Daniel Roome, Kelly's father.
His astonishment however, isn't unusual according to the director of the Casa de Esperanza shelter in nearby Yuba City.
"There is nothing safer about it being the military," said Marsha Krouse-Taylor, the shelter's director. She claimed domestic violence involving airmen from Beale Air Force Base come across her desk regularly. In fact, Krouse-Taylor feared this latest case might be one of her clients.
She said it's not that there are more abusers in the military but the issue is often smothered until it explodes because the abused and their families think this simply cannot be.
"I don't think domestic violence is on the radar. That this is still something that you're going to have to watch out for. Because it doesn't matter if you're in the military or not," said Krouse-Taylor.
