SACRAMENTO, CA - Tuesday night was special for 12 outstanding teachers from Northern California who gathered at the Esquire Imax theater in downtown Sacramento to be honored for their hard work in the classroom.
Among them, a teacher who fights childhood obesity everyday by getting her students moving and an elementary school teacher who makes home visits to understand his students better.
After each was honored in front of family and friends, Daniel Watts from Carson Creek Jr./Sr. High School took top honors. Watts teaches computer graphics to high school boys who've been on the wrong side of the law. His classroom is within the boundaries of Sacramento County's Boys Ranch and his students are all considered "at-risk".
"There is an incredible epidemic in at-risk youth there who need direction, " said Watts. "I . . . just figured I'd come in and fill the need."
Watts is a second generation teacher who followed in his mother's footsteps. He was also recently named Educator of the Year for Sacramento County.
In addition to a check for $5,000 from Schools Credit Union, Watts will receive a weekend spa getaway from the Natomas Inn and Spa and four vouchers on Southwest Airlines.
All of the teachers honored Tuesday received dinners from the L Wine Lounge and Urban Kitchen, RiverCats tickets, and a Monarchs' opening night package.
