SACRAMENTO, CA - Many Sacramento International Airport patrons had to do a double-take as about a dozen dogs wandered the baggage claim area Friday.
The pups were part of Canine Companions For Independence, a non-profit organization that trains dogs to help people with disabilities.
"Honestly, if someone told me how much of a difference a dog could have made, I couldn't have understood it until I got my own service dog," said Wallis Bozman.
Bozman, 22, has Generalized Dystonia, a neuromuscular disorder that causes her muscles to contract and contort on their own. She was facing a life without independence until she adopted Caspin, a black lab and graduate of CCI.
"My neurological condition makes it so I can't move sometimes at all," she explained. "But once I got Caspin, he's trained to move my wheel chair for me if I become paralyzed or have muscle spasms," she said. "He can get things for me, open drawers, even doors."
CCI runs purely on donations.
"Donations are tough to get during this economic climate," said Carly Fermer, of CCI. "But people can give by donating time because volunteers are always needed," she added.
