SACRAMENTO, CA - If you're experiencing tightness in your chest, shortness of breath, or discomfort through your shoulders, call your doctor for an appointment to determine if it's a sign of heart disease, said Friday's Live_Online guest, Dr. Diane Sobkowicz, a Sutter Health cardiologist.
Friday was "National Wear Red Day," part of the "Go Red for Women" campaign by the American Heart Association to make women more aware of heart disease and the factors that may put them at risk. A family history of heart disease is a leading risk factor, along with poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, according to the association.
One of Sobkowicz's patients, Patty Wahlman, shared her story with viewers. She had an untreated strep infection as a child and that led to heart problems later in life, which required surgeries for a mechanical heart valve and a pacemaker.
Heart disease is the leading killer of women in the U.S., but according to a survey cited by Sobkowicz, only 13 percent of women who are at risk of heart disease know about their situation. So public education remains a number one priority of the American Heart Association.
