SACRAMENTO, CA - Accusing Gov. Schwarzenegger of "catastrophic leadership failings," the California Correctional Peace Officers Association launched a petition campaign this week to recall Schwarzenegger from office.
"He's lost the faith of the people who put him in office," said CCPOA spokesman Lance Corcoran. "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the worst governor in the history of worst governors."
CCPOA has often sparred with Schwarzenegger over issues like prison reform and correctional officer salaries. The union is seeking pay increases for their officers this year but contract negotiations with the governor's administration have stalled.
Monday, Schwarzenegger said CCPOA is demanding more money than the state can afford and said he will not be influenced by their "intimidation tactics."
"I will not get intimidated by these guys," Schwarzenegger told reporters outside his capitol office. "I will only make decisions that (are) based on what is best for the people of California."
CCPOA had planned to formally serve their "Notice of Intention to Circulate Recall Petition" to Schwarzenegger's office Monday, but now says it will deliver the notice sometime Tuesday.
Schwarzenegger's office will have seven days to respond then the paperwork is filed with the Secretary of State's office.
Recall backers would need to collect 1,041,530 petition signatures to qualify the recall for a special election ballot.
Former California Gray Davis was the first governor in California history to be recalled when he was ousted by voters in October 2003. Schwarzenegger was elected to replace Davis.
