GALT, CA - Gold medal U.S. Olympian Stephanie Brown Trafton is officially a household name in the city of Galt.
Trafton was treated to one of the biggest homecoming parties this small community has ever thrown Wednesday evening, complete with cheerleaders, a police escort and roses.
"This is so awesome. I've never seen this much support from anybody," said gold medalist Trafton.
During the Olympic Games in Beijing, Trafton stunned her competition by throwing the discus more than 212 feet. No American woman has won gold in the sport since 1932.
"We're so proud of her. She's truly put our city on the map," said Galt resident Janette Munsil.
The gold medal winner is modest about her feat, but loved the fact that so many people braved the heat of the evening to come and greet her.
Trafton was also awarded a t-shirt and honorary membership to the Sacramento Tall Club. Stephanie Brown Trafton is 6 feet, 4 inches tall.
Trafton joined News10 Live_Online Thursday. It's not often that someone visits our newsroom and creates a stir, but Stephanie Brown Trafton did just that.
She told us that people immediately assume she is a basketball player, and that is the sport that got her started. In college she won a basketball athletic scholarship but an injury her sophomore year lead her to focus on track and field.
Stephanie actually made the winning throw on her first try in Beijing and as you can imagine, it is an experience she will never forget.
She is off to Europe next week to continue competing.
