STOCKTON, CA - A 21-year-old man was shot and killed by officers early Sunday after leading a pursuit and allegedly trying to run over police, a Stockton CHP spokesman said.
The incident began when officers tried to pull over a pick-up around 1:20 a.m. Sunday near Van Allen and Gawne roads in Stockton, CHP spokesman Adrian Quintero said.
Officers said the driver, 21-year-old Joseph Anthony Pinasco, took off, leading pursuing officers on a short chase before crashing the truck minutes later at Little John and Oakwood roads.
When officers got out of their cars to arrest Pinasco, Quintero said Pinasco turned the truck around and headed straight toward police. Officers opened fire on the truck, striking Pinasco. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were hurt in the exchange and the shooting was under investigation, Quintero said. Officers said they believed Pinasco may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting. A full toxicology report will be peformed.
