FAIRFIELD, CA - They're not your father's driving simulator -- or anything from high school Driver's Ed.

New high-tech driving simulators are providing officers with a 180-degree view of a virtual reality city, complete with bad guys.

"This is very real. It's like driving my patrol car. There's no two ways about it," said Fairfield police officer David Neal.

Officers say the simulators don't teach driving skills, only good decision making.

Training instructors create different driving scenarios for officers from a computer across the room, including high-speed chases.

Fairfield is spending $200,000 on the computer trainers. The city hopes the investment will help keep officers safe while on duty.
