TRUCKEE, CA - Truckee police officers smashed a window Sunday night to free a black bear that had locked itself into a Honda SUV, the third such incident in the past two weeks.
The bear caused substantial damage to the vehicle parked on Stuart Staithe in the Glenshire neighborhood, according to a police department news release.
Police said officers broke the window because they couldn't locate the owner of the Honda.
Last Tuesday, a bear got stuck in a car in Prosser Lakeview and was let out by the car's owner.
The week before, on Sept. 30, a bear got stuck in a car on Alder Drive near Alder Creek Middle School and broke a window to escape.
There was major damage to all three of the vehicles involved, according to police.
Truckee police passed along a recommendation from the Bear League suggesting car windows be rolled up and the doors locked.
The Bear League also recommends against leaving food or other smelly items in vehicles.
