Airsoft pellet gun found on youth near Cleveland Elementary School, Oct. 8, 2013
STOCKTON, CA - A teacher arriving at Cleveland School in Stockton reported seeing a boy with a gun near the school Tuesday morning.
After police were called, the school was in lockdown for about 20 minutes. Police quickly found the boy who led police to the gun he'd been carrying. It turned out to be airsoft pellet gun.
"We had to go under the desks in the corner. We stayed calm," said 9-year-old Brennen Marca, a fourth grader.
Brennan and his mother just moved to Stockton. She quickly became aware of Cleveland's history. In 1989, a gunman killed five children and wounded 29 others in a schoolyard attack there.
"Obviously, when you hear something like that, you get scared since this was the same school where everything happened 20 years ago. Your heart drops because you send your child to school and it's supposed to be safe," said Angela Cao.
School spokesperson Diane Barth said the boy was either 13 or 14, and had been expelled from Cleveland. She couldn't provide the reason for the discipline.
