HEMET, CA - A Cal Fire airtanker crashed Friday evening while landing at Hemet Ryan Air Attack Base in Riverside County.
The pilot was not injured, but the S-2T Gruman airtanker was damaged while returning from a small wildfire in Good Hope, Calif.
The airport's runway will stay closed while the National Transportation Safety Board and Cal Fire investigate the crash.
"This serves as a stark reminder of the danger of our profession," Cal Fire Chief Ken Pimlott said in a press release. "We must continue to keep public and firefighter safety a priority, especially during these Red Flag conditions."
