A Sacramento Democrat resigned after tweeting "appalling and inexcusable" comments at a GOP staff member after House Republicans voted to defund President Barack Obama's Health Care law.
Speech writer for Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, Amanda Carpenter, tweeted to urge Republicans to vote for defunding the law:
"GOP beat gun control, changed Obama's mind on Syria, is holding the line on amnesty. We can defund Obamacare, too!"
In response, Volunteer Communications Chair for the Democratic Party of Sacramento County Allan Brauer tweeted:
"@amandacarpenter May your children all die from debilitating, painful and incurable diseases."
Brauer later apologized to Carpenter in a tweet:
"Hi @AmandaCarpenter I am truly sorry for my tweet. I was very upset and lashed out. Your kids are not fair game either. My apologies."
The DPSC called for and then accepted Brauer's resignation.
"The comments by our volunteer communications chair are appalling and inexcusable," DPSC chair Kerri Asbury said. "No matter what our political disagreements may be, wishing harm is never an acceptable response during heated public debate or any other time. Mr. Brauer has apologized for his comments and expressed his remorse."
