SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) - California's new voter registration site drew more than 1 million users this fall and helped at least 380,000 voters sign up for the first time.
The secretary of state's office announced Tuesday that it had added more than 680,000 voters to the rolls in the 45 days before California's registration deadline. Online registrants accounted for more than half of the verified new voters.
The registration site, which went live Sept. 19, is the result of a recent law that aims to increase voter participation.
The state is still verifying many of the voter applications and updates submitted online, and will publish official statistics Nov. 2. Voter registration closed Monday.
Secretary of state spokeswoman Shannan Velayas called the online system a "success by all accounts."
