SACRAMENTO, CA - The varsity and junior varsity football games between McClatchy and Florin high schools scheduled for Thursday night were postponed due to the sudden, serious illness of a player.

According Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman Gabe Ross, a 14-year-old student who plays on the junior varsity squad became sick at school Thursday and was hospitalized. A diagnosis hasn't been made public but the district said the student's condition wasn't contagious.

With the student in contact with other players, the school district chose to play it safe and cancel the Thursday games and they had a special cleaning crew working at McClatchy High Thursday night.

Ross said the county health department did not recommend the extra precautions but the school officials decided it was the best thing to do. County health officials said it was unnecessary to cancel Friday classes and McClatchy is in regular schedule.

A date for the make-up games hasn't been set.
