MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say the suspect in the shooting of a California Highway Patrol officer on a San Francisco Bay area freeway shot the officer without warning in the head.

Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Wednesday that footage from a dashboard camera showed Officer Kenyon Youngstrom and the suspect, 36-year-old Christopher Boone Lacy of Corning, had a brief conversation following a traffic stop before Lacy pulled his gun.
Youngstrom's partner had apparently initiated the Tuesday morning traffic stop on Interstate 680 near Alamo in a separate vehicle. Lee said the partner shot Lacy, who was later pronounced dead.
Inside the Jeep, detectives found a loaded semi-automatic handgun, two loaded magazines and a knife, Lee said.
He said an autopsy on Lacy Wednesday morning showed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
According to Lee, the suspect was being pulled over on suspicion of driving with an obstructed license plate.
The 37-year-old Youngstrom remains in critical condition. He has been with the CHP for seven years.
