AUBURN, CA - A tow truck driver died from injuries he sustained in a hit and run collision Tuesday afternoon on westbound Interstate 80 at the Ophir Road exit in Placer County.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer David Martinez, David Garfield Robinson, Jr., 30, of Citrus Heights, worked with Golden State Towing. He was standing partially in the far right lane of the interstate.

The involved vehicle may be a small, dark sedan but there were no witnesses to the collision, Martinez said.

Passerby Denisa Duarte said as they drove by the Ophir Road exit she saw a man laying in the right lane. She said no one was stopping. She pulled over just past the tow truck and called 911.

Why Robinson was stopped on the roadside wasn't known. Martinez said he wasn't towing a vehicle.

The hit and run occurred at about 4:15 p.m. Traffic was congested in the area as drivers were directed back onto I-80 at Highway 193 just south of Auburn. The roadway re-opened around 5:30 p.m. and traffic was moving smoothly.
