STOCKTON, CA - Stockton police detectives are asking the public for help in solving a homicide that took place last April near Victory Park.
Fernando Maldonado, 19, was in his car on the 1600 block of Argonne Drive around 9:30 a.m. April 13 when investigators say he got into an altercation with other people. Maldonado was then shot and killed.
Police spokesman Pete Smith said his department is frustrated by the lack of assistance from witnesses.
"Investigators believe there are witnesses out there that would be key to this investigation. If not pushing forward, they could get it over the top so there's closure for the family," said Smith.
Maldonado's mother said through a translator Wednesday that her son's killing has taken its toll.
"If someone knows what happened to Fernando, can they call the police? They don't know the damage they did to (me) and (my) family," she said.
Stockton has seen 39 homicides in 2010, nearly double the number of homicides from last year at this time. Smith said there have been arrests in 19 of those cases.
