SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- South Lake Tahoe Police are investigating a fatal DUI accident in which a pedestrian was killed Friday night.
Police responded at 6:45 p.m. for an accident in front of the Taco Bell located at 2681 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Officers found a 51-year-old male pedestrian lying in the roadway. CPR was adminstered at the scene to attempt to resuscitate the man, the victim was transported to Barton Memorial Hopital where he was pronounced deceased, said South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Shannon Laney.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, 49-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident, Gregory Stearns was contacted by police.
Laney said during the course of the investigation, Stearns was found to be driving with a suspended license for a prior DUI conviction and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and with a suspended license.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, intial indications are that the pedestrian was crossing Lake Tahoe Blvd. outside of a crosswalk, was wearing dark clothing in an unlit portion of the highway, and failed to yield to the oncoming traffic. The pedestrian may have also been intoxicated, Laney said.
The identity of the victim will be released once their family has been notified.
