MONTEREY, CA (AP) - A Salinas woman has been ordered to serve 25 years to life for the steel-bar beating death of her attorney boyfriend.
The Monterey County Herald reports that 44-year-old Verginia Turner was given the mandatory sentence Friday after she was convicted in December of killing Mark Hafen in his Salinas home in September of 2010.
During the 2½-week trial, Monterey County prosecutors told jurors that Turner had killed the 58-year-old Hafen because she feared Hafen was about to end the relationship.
The Herald says admitted beating Hafen, but claimed it was in self-defense after he had battered her for years.
