SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Union officials say thousands of registered nurses at nine San Francisco Bay area hospitals will be walking off the job on the day before Christmas.
A spokesman for the California Nurses Association say nurses will be going on a one-day strike on Dec. 24 at seven hospitals operated by Sutter Health and at two San Jose hospitals affiliated with the Hospital Corporation of America.
The strike - the eighth by CNA since September 2011 - comes as union leaders and hospital officials remain at odds over staffing levels, health benefits and other issues.
The Christmas Eve strike adds to a growing list of recent strikes by workers represented by other unions in Northern California, including a one-day strike by custodians and electrical workers that shut down the Port of Oakland last month.
