SACRAMENTO, CA - This could soon become a sign of the times; major corporations offering scholarship money for students struggling in a down economy.

"The private sector, public sector partnerships; business coming in adopting schools, business's seeing the dreams of the students and helping them reach those dreams," State Superintendent of Education Tom Torlakson said."This is the kind of partnership that's creative, also gets students connected to the real world-the jobs that are out there and the future for them."

At McClatchy High School in Sacramento, members of the senior class spent part of the day filling out online applications.
PG&E is offering $1 million in scholarships to young people in northern and central California, that's 10 full-ride scholarships and $2,500 each to as many as 40 more students.

"The scholarship program is different from others in that, while we agree that education and academic success should be a top criteria, it shouldn't be the only criteria," PG&E spokesperson Ezra Garrett said.
