MODESTO, CA - A Modesto man was sentenced to 12 years in state prison after pleading no contest to the rape and sexual battery of a 14-year-old girl he picked up.

Stanislaus County Assistant District Attorney Carol Shipley says according to court testimony, Christopher Lewis Armstrong, 29, and another man picked up the victim and her 14-year-old friend on Colfax Avenue in Modesto on Jan. 5, 2011. The girls admitted to voluntarily getting in Armstrong's SUV.

The girls were given liquor and became drunk. Per the court record, one of the girls was attacked and then dragged out of the Chevrolet Avalanche. She screamed and broke free and escaped.

Armstrong drove off in his vehicle with the other girl, according to Shipley, took her to an orchard where she was sexually assaulted, choked and beaten.

The girl who previously escaped flagged a passerby to call 911 for help.

The second girl was found by Modesto police detectives at El Vista Avenue and Edgebrook Drive that afternoon.

Armstrong was sentenced Wednesday in Stanislaus County Court.
