GALT, CA - Two men were arrested with one being shot following an attempted burglary at a coffee shop in Galt around 2 a.m. Friday.
Deputy Jason Ramos of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department said Galt police received an alert of an activated alarm at the It's A Grind Coffee shop at 10420 Twin Cities Road.
One responding unit saw a possible suspect on the street in the vicinity and attempted to detain him. The man fled and officers pursued, said Ramos.
According to Ramos, another patrol unit was in the area of the coffee shop at the time of the call and entered the business. Upon entry, the two officers saw a man behind the counter.
Spotting the officers, the man ran from behind the counter toward the backdoor to escape, but when he couldn't get out, he turned and ran for the front door where one of officers was located. The second officer noticed an object in the suspected burglar's hand resembling a hammer. The officer ordered the man to drop the object, but the man refused. The officer then fired his weapon to protect his partner, Ramos said.
The suspected burglar was hit once in the upper body and once in the lower body. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery for what Ramos called "life-threatening injuries."
The second suspected burglar was found hiding beneath an RV about an hour later by canine units and arrested. The man sustained a dog bite during the arrest, according to Ramos.
Per standard procedure, the officer who shot the suspected burglar was placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
