  • GREAT HANG UP - A new trend among students called designated texting or "D.T." has a passenger field texts so the driver can focus on the road.

There are plenty of texts to field. The volume of texts according to Neilsen Wire includes an average of 3339 texts sent or received each month by teens. Most teens, 78% in this survery, prefer texting versus calling on the phone.

Some student government friends at McClatchy High School reveal teens don't turn off the phones as they always want to be accessible.  Therefore, shutting off their phone while driving is not a realistic option.

The designated texter option is appealing in that you don't miss a text and the "D.T" also gets to be the D.J. in charge of music in the car.

The McClatchy teens including Brittney, Izzy, Noah, Veronica, Matt and Page share while this may be a newer trends, they've been doing it for awhile on their own because it seems like the safe and smart thing to do.

TAKE THE PLEDGE NOT TO TEXT AND DRIVE
