Streets around Del Paso & Rio Linda Boulevards were flooded Tuesday by a broken watermain.

SACRAMENTO, CA - A water main break in Sacramento's Del Paso Heights neighborhood Tuesday flooded three city blocks and left business owners scrambling to keep the water from flooding their shops.

The main broke around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Del Paso and Rio Linda Boulevards, according to the Sacramento Dept. of Utilities.

The water was several inches deep across the road, leaving the intersection impassable to traffic during the height of the evening rush hour. At least six businesses have interior flooding, and employees at some businesses are using sandbags to try and keep the water out.

As of 7:00 p.m. a Utility Department spokeswoman said work crews were on the scene trying to get the water level down, and they expect to have it fixed sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The 12-inch water main is 68 years old, according Sacramento Dept. of Utilities spokeswoman Jesica Hess. Hess said the iron pipes have a projected lifespan of 70 years.
