SACRAMENTO, CA - Witnesses who watched a prison guard slam into multiple parked cars Monday prevented him from leaving the supermarket parking lot until the California Highway Patrol arrived.
Witnesses said David Perrault, 43, identified himself as a correctional officer. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation later confirmed his employment.
Adam Urnberg, who works in the Safeway shopping center at 8377 Elk Grove Florin Road, said he heard a crash and initially thought it was a routine fender bender.
"He just kept going," Urnberg said.
Perrault's blue Mustang hit four parked cars before body damage prevented the front tires from turning. Urnberg and another witness, Derek Green, watched Perrault get out of the car.
"He had a bottle of peppermint schnapps in his hand, wrapped in a t-shirt, and his keys were in the other hand," Green said.
The two men kept Perrault from walking away from the crash scene.
"I walked up to him and said 'dude, you're not going anywhere,'" Urnberg said.
Perrault was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on DUI charges but bailed out later in the day.
A call to CDCR seeking information about Perrault's job location and employment status was not immediately returned.
