BERKELEY, CA - A trip through Tibet and China caught Willow Lune's attention not only for the beautiful scenery, but for parenting practices that made a lot of sense to her.

"It was touching to see how bonded the parents and children were," Lune said. "Even infants were able to communicate with their parents when they had to eliminate and the parents were very responsive."

Lune now teaches "elimination communication" at Birthways Studio in Berkeley, guiding moms and dads through the stages of learning their child's elimination cues.

"All animals know not to urinate or defecate on themselves and human babies are no different," said Lune. "They know from the time they're born. This isn't about getting them to hold it. It's about us paying attention to their own natural instincts."

Thirty five states now have support groups for parents who want to raise their babies diaper free. The motivation varies from those seeking an additional bonding experience, to enviornmental concerns, to saving money.

The average baby will use $2,000 to $3,000 worth of diapers before potty training is complete.

As difficult as it may sound to most parents to go without diapers, Lune says it is less work in the long run.

"We're encouraging them to pay attention to their bodily instincts instead of training them to ignore them only to reintroduce the concept to them later during potty training," Lune said.
