STOCKTON, CA - A Stockton man was shot and killed while defending a relative after a fight led to gunfire outside a Halloween party early Saturday, a San Joaquin County Sheriff's spokesman said.
Jose Antonio Carillo died from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body after the confrontation outside the private party at a club on the 4300 block of North Ashley Lane in Stockton around 1 a.m., San Joaquin County Sheriff's spokesman Les Garcia said.
Garcia said the fight started after one of Carillo's relatives walked into a ladies' restroom looking for a woman who became ill during the party. The suspect, identified by witnesses as Richard Lukic of Modesto, became offended and confronted the relative, sparking the fight.
Carillo attempted to intervene and the fight became physical outside, Garcia said.
During the fight, witnesses said Lukic, 36, pulled a gun and fired several times, hitting Carillo. Carillo was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Lukic, who was wearing a security guard costume at the party, fled the scene after the shooting. He turned himself in to sheriff's investigators Saturday afternoon in French Camp.
