CITRUS HEIGHTS, Ca - A fire captain with the Sacramento Metro Fire Department was arrested on suspicion of child pornography possession and distribution.
Citrus Heights police Lt. Thomas Chaplin said Steven Craig Campbell, 51, is facing allegations of possession and distribution of child sexual exploitation images as well as communication/contact with a minor with intent to commit an offense.
Chaplin said Campbell was using the Internet to exchange images of child sexual exploitation with other individuals. Investigators served a search warrant at Campbell's home on the 4800 block of Polo Court in Fair Oaks.
Campbell worked for Sacramento Metro Fire for 30 years and was immediately placed on administrative leave upon his arrest. He has subsequently retired.
Campbell was the ranking firefighter at the department's fire station on Winding Way in Sacramento.
The fire department issued a statement expressing sadness at the arrest.
The Sacramento Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force assisted in the investigation, which is continuing, police say.
Campbell is free on bail.
