SACRAMENTO, CA – The Sacramento County Coroner reports that the student who shot himself at Mira Loma High School in Sacramento Monday died Tuesday evening.

Michael Berry, 17, was enrolled in Mira Loma's International Studies Program and was also a member of the school's track team.

After a loud noise was heard from a second story restroom about 10:15 a.m. Monday, a vice principal went to investigate and found the boy alone in the restroom with a single gunshot to his head.

There was a .38 calibre handgun and a note nearby.

Trent Allen, spokesman for the San Juan Unified School District, said the boy was transported to San Juan Mercy Medical Center where he was on life support, Allen said.

The school district notified parents of Mira Loma students of the shooting, and classes continued as usual on Monday.

Seven crisis counselors were called to the campus for students and staff to express their grief.

Counselor Barry Turner advised parents to discuss the tragedy with their children and let them know that there are always solutions to problems.

"Talk to them, listen to them, try to answer their questions, and try to turn that around that, 'Hey, if you were ever upset or knew someone that's upset, what could you do?' and hopefully they could tell a trusted adult on campus that this student is distraught," said Turner.
