Joseph Mendez demonstrates his backswing
STOCKTON - Eighty-year-old Joseph Mendez wasn't hurt so he can joke a bit about being robbed by two young men Saturday in Stockton. "They took off running and I went after them, but at my age, I wasn't that fast," he said.
Mendez was on a walk at three in the afternoon on a greenbelt in Stockton's Weston Ranch neighborhood, when one man grabbed him from behind, and a second man pulled the wallet from his pocket.
Mendez walks with a golf club, partly for his stability but also for self defense, just in case something like this happens.
"As soon as he grabbed me from behind I tried to get away. I remembered I had the club and whacked him. Don't know if I hit him in the head or shoulder, but he let me go," said Mendez.
Mendez actually found his wallet a few streets away and some items were stolen. He wasn't hurt, except for his pride. "I was disappointed in me, because I couldn't do anything else. I consider myself in better shape," he said.
He told police the two young men were both about 5'10" tall and weighed about 160 pounds. He said both were wearing black hats and black hooded sweatshirts.
