Two people are in custody in connection to a body that was found dismembered at a campsite. The gruesome scene marked Stockton's first homicide this year.
Bryan Scott Cook and Valentina Taz face murder charges for the death of 48-year-old Michael Shane Jones of Stockton.
Police began their investigation inside a southwest Stockton home in the 4500 block of Mist Trail Drive on Jan. 2, where they discovered a bloody crime scene, but did not find a victim or a suspect.
Neighbors said the home had been vacant for a while.
"There were people moving about a month and a half ago," Stockton resident David Mendoza said.
Police eventually got a tip that led them 70 miles east to a campsite in Groveland. That's where Cook was found with Jones' remains, Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva said.
"When our homicide detectives were looking around the campsite, they located in a campfire a human torso," Silva said.
Police obtained a search warrant and found more of the victim's limbs.
"They went inside the suspect's vehicle and located a dismembered body of an adult male," Silva said.
On Friday night, police arrested Taz.
Police said Jones was a tenant at the home, but have not released a motive for the murder.
