STOCKTON, Caluf. - A broken door led to a sad and disturbing discovery in Stockton Tuesday morning.

Stockton police officers were responding to a call about the door on a home on the 500 block of W. Bianchi Road at 6:20 a.m. when they found the body of a 94-year-old woman inside. Authorities said it appeared the woman had been dead for some time and foul play wasn't suspected.

Officers also noted the home had been ransacked more than once.

"This situation is barbaric since the preliminary investigation is revealing that even though the woman was deceased, people kept coming back and burglarizing it," Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva said.

"It's very unnerving, we live like three houses down and it's just very scary," neighbor Arabella Stoffel said. "Heartless, totally heartless."

The elderly woman has not yet been identified, but Stoffel said she used to see her gardening outside and appeared to be well.

"She always took very good care of her front yard even at her advanced age she was always out there cleaning and keeping it tidy," Stoffel said.

While the street has a history of crime, neighbors are still stunned.

"We had a home invasion. [My husband] was beaten up in 2012, so it's not uncommon, but that poor woman, it's just not right," Stoffel said.

An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the woman's cause of death.

The Stockton Police Department asked for anyone with information about this burglary to call the department at (209) 937-8377, Investigations at (209) 937-8323, or Crime Stoppers at (209) 946-0600. Callers can remain anonymous.
