MODESTO - A 36-year-old Modesto man did not survive when he crashed his Pontiac GTO into a retaining wall and was ejected, according to Modesto police.

The crash was on eastbound W. Briggsmore Avenue just east of Prescott Road at approximately 9:48 p.m. Despite emergency responders efforts to get the driver to a local hospital immediately, he did not survive, said Officer Scott Nelson.

Police were told by several witnesses just prior to the collision that the 2004 GTO may have racing with a white or silver BMW sedan. Nelson said the BMW's driver may not have realized there was a collision and did not stop.

It wasn't immediately known if the driver of the GTO was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Nelson said.

Anyone with information or witnesses to this collision was encouraged to contact Nelson at (209) 652-2160. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can also text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a text message to 274637. Type "TIP704" along with your message.
