SACRAMENTO, CA -- Sacramento has long been considered a community rich in track and field, and now track is back.
Sacramento State has been awarded the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"Track is back in 'Shaq'ramento," announced Mayor Kevin Johnson Tuesday at Sacramento State.
From this latest announcement, to the push of a new downtown basketball arena and the Sacramento Republics soccer team, Sacramento appears to be sprinting toward becoming the next big sports city.
"It's more of my vision to put Sacramento on the map," said Johnson.
"Seeing Sacramento coming to it and saying, 'hey, we want to get back into the track business,' it tells you a lot of things are lined up in the right way," said Jim Estes, Director of Events for USA Track & Field.
Estes said 1,000 of the nation's top track and field athletes will be in town for the championships.
"You're going to see current stars and you're going to see future stars," Estes said.
If all goes smoothly next year, there's the possibility the Olympic Trials could return to Sacramento.
"The biggest piece of the puzzle is the new track," said Steve Hammond, President and CEO of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB) and Sacramento Sports Commission.
Hammond said the SCVB, along with the local hotel community, will front the cost to resurface the track. It's a $1.2 million project designed to be one of the best in the world. It is expected to pay itself off within five years.
With a track of that caliber drawing top athletes and spectators, the economic impact could be impressive.
"People will be here for five or six days. Of course, with people who will come in from out of town to watch the event will be driving economic impact, but it certainly is going to be in the millions of dollars," said Hammond.
Next year's USA championship event also presents great exposure opportunities for the Sacramento region -- something Johnson hopes to capitalize on.
"When you can host a national track and field here in Sacramento, something that we did in the past, and reclaim that, that is a big deal because the country and the world will be watching events here in 2014, and we want to build on it," said Johnson.
The 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.will be held June 26-29.
