Crews searched the south fork of the Yuba River for 65-year-old Walter Steever.
NEVADA CITY, CA - A San Jose man expected to return from a mining outing did not return this past weekend as expected and now searchers are looking for 65-year-old Walter Steever.
UPDATE: Searchers find body believed to missing gold miner
The Nevada County Sheriff's Office says there are approximately 40 people on the ground and using horses, dogs and ATVs as well as a helicopter in the effort to find the missing man. The search began Monday when Steever was reported missing and his vehicle was located in a fire lane at the end of Owl Creek Road. He reportedly would park there and walk down to South Yuba River.
With a cold front arriving over the weekend, there's concern over Steever's condition if he is lost or injured.
"Concerns are obviously water first, food would be next and then what's his health like? And hypothermia would kick in to that," said Sgt. Sam Brown, search coordinator with the Nevada County Sheriff's Department.
Steever left Oct. 23. He was described as white, 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds. There have been no sightings of him thus far, searchers say.
"Hopefully he's gotten somewhere warm that he can bed down and we can locate him there in that kind of condition," Brown said.
