GRANITE BAY, CA - Placer County sheriff's deputies arrived in time to thwart a potential residential burglary Wednesday afternoon while a 14-year-old girl was at home.
Sheriff's spokesperson Dena Erwin said burglary suspect Mitchell Paul Leahy, 34, of El Dorado Hills, was found hiding in the backyard of the home on Barton Road.
The mother of the teen home at the time called 911 at 4:30 p.m. to say her daughter was home alone and a man was trying to force open the sliding door. The girl said the man had first knocked at the front door and she hadn't answered it.
Erwin said deputies found a crowbar Leahy is suspected of using on the sliding door in the backyard. They also recovered as loaded gun, drugs, identity information belong to others, stolen property and a fake passport in Leahy's car.
The girl wasn't hurt.
Leahy, on bail release on burglary charges in Sacramento County, was booked on suspicion of burglary, identity theft, receiving stolen property, commission of a crime while on bail and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony as well as giving a false identification of peace officers.
Bail was set at $175,000.
