YOLO COUNTY, Calif. - A decision to battle through an exhausting journey from Washington state to Turlock resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy Thursday morning, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

A father, his son and the boy's cousin began their journey Wednesday afternoon and chose to alternate drivers in Yreka around midnight, rather than stop. As they approached Sacramento on southbound Interstate 5 north of County Road 22 at 4:55 a.m., the 18-year-old cousin fell asleep at the wheel, said officers.

The Toyota Corolla, traveling about 65 mph, veered off the interstate and rolled down an embankment.

The 13 year old, who was lying across the back seat and strapped in by a lap belt, was partially ejected and killed in the crash, officers said.

The cousin, identified as Sergio Gomez-Sandoval, and the victim's father, Galvan Audel, 39, suffered minor abrasions in the wreck.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor in the crash, said CHP Officer Cindy Leal.

The victim and his father are from Delhi; Gomez-Sandoval is from Turlock.
