Sacramento police investigate death of woman killed by Light Rail Train.
SACRAMENTO, CA - A woman died after being hit by a Light Rail train Wednesday night.
The crash happened near North C and 12th streets around 7:45 p.m., Sacramento police said.
The train driver, traveling north on 12th Street, said he saw a woman lying across the tracks and hit the brakes. Unfortunately, the train did not stop in time.
The woman was wearing dark clothing, according to RT spokesperson Alane Masui.
Sacramento police officer Luis Canela said the train operator did not see the woman in time to stop.
"Absolutely, because there's two trains, if not three at times, all connected," Canela explained. "It's just hard to stop in time."
Eyewitness Patrice Lavine said they heard two loud blasts from the train's air horn just before the woman was hit.
"We were standing outside and we just heard two big, loud horns," Lavine recalled. "So we walked over here because we heard all the ambulances and we came and we saw the body under the train but we didn't want to go close so we just stayed back."
Police said it is unclear why the woman was on the tracks; the incident is under investigation.
Investigators would like to hear from anyone who may have information about the woman.
Passengers who were stranded on the train were taken by bus to the next station to continue to their destinations.
