COLFAX - A fire of a trailer pulling approximately 50 cattle lead to the death of some cows and the search for more Sunday evening.
CHP says that a truck coming from Rio Vista was hauling a trailer when it experienced a mechanical problem in the area of I-80 near Canyon Way. The driver pulled off the freeway to inspect the problem.
It was there that a fire sparked. The trailer was compromised, allowing some of the cattle to escape. The fire is believed to have killed approximately 6 of the cattle.
According to CHP, the trailer was hauling approximately 50 cattle. This was a mixture of cows and calves.
Due to the loose cattle, CHP conducted traffic control along I-80 to ensure that vehicles would not be involved in a collision with any of the cows or calves that may run onto the freeway.
CHP, along with people from the local ranching community that got word of the incident, offered assisting to round up majority of the loose cattle.
No people were injured in the fire. Another trailer arrived to the scene to offload the remaining cows and continue to transport them.
