SACRAMENTO, CA - A teenage boy was shot and killed in a commercial area of south Sacramento Saturday afternoon.
Detectives responded to the Raley's parking lot on the 4500 block of Mack Road around 1:58 p.m. after getting reports of the shooting, Sacramento police said.
Witnesses told police there was a fight between two groups of people at the curb in front of the store. The fight later escalated when someone pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the other group, Officer Doug Morse said.
Javillion Ward, 15, was shot. A California Highway Patrol officer driving by the area and was able to pull over and help Ward. Morse said the boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The suspect that fired the gun ran away from the area after the shooting.
It's unclear what started the fight and if other suspects were armed. Morse said detectives are still investigating if the fight was gang related.
Several people were at the scene of the shooting, detectives said.
