SACRAMENTO, CA - More than a week after the launch of Covered California, at least one of the dozen companies selected to offer health care plans is unable to take customer calls.
Two representatives of Anthem Blue Cross told a caller seeking information about individual coverage they were not authorized to even talk about Covered California coverage.
Covered California spokesperson Dana Howard said Anthem Blue Cross had not completed a fingerprinting process that would allow agents to take calls.
"A Live Scan has to be done and a background check for anyone who is selling a Covered California health insurance plan," Howard said. "That's just necessary because you're dealing with people's personal information."
Howard was unable to say which other companies were still waiting for clearance.
In any case, people seeking coverage can contact Covered California directly, with health care plans from all 12 providers available for sale.
Howard said all 12 companies would be cleared to process customer orders by next week.
