OAKLAND - The Oakland Athletics evened the AL division series at a game apiece by winning a 1-0 pitchers' duel against Detroit. Stephen Vogt lined a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth for the only run.
A's rookie Sonny Gray matched zeros with Justin Verlander in a sensational playoff performance but both left with a no decision.
Yoenis Cespedes and Seth Smith hit back-to-back singles against loser Al Alburquerque to start the winning rally. Then Josh Reddick was intentionally walked before Rick Porcello entered to face Vogt, who ended it with a line drive single.
Grant Balfour pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the win.
The series moves to Detroit for Games 3 and 4 starting Monday afternoon at Comerica Park.
