SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento's Urijah Faber will fight Modesto's Michael McDonald as the co-main event when the UFC returns to Sleep Train Arena on December 14th.
The UFC made the announcement on twitter, "@UFC: December 14th #UFConFox in Sacramento co-main event will be @UrijahFaber vs. @MaydayMcDonald," ending speculation if Sacramento's most popular fighter would get a chance to represent his hometown.
Faber (29-6) will be fighting in his fourth bout this year and remains the #2 ranked UFC Bantamweight contender. The "California Kid" is on a three fight win streak finishing Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgenson, and most recently defeating Iuri Alcantara by decision last August. It will be his first fight in Sacramento since losing to Jose Aldo for WEC Featherweight Championship in April of 2010.
Currently, McDonald (16-2) is ranked as the #3 Bantamweight contender in the UFC. "May Day", who calls Modesto his hometown is coming off an impressive second round submission (triangle choke) victory over Brad Pickett in August.
While the UFC rounds out the rest of the Sacramento fight card, several other locals fighters remain a possibility. Many believe Joseph Benavidez (19-3) and Chad Mendes (15-1) are ready for championship rematches against Demetrious Johnson (Flyweight champ) and Jose Aldo (Featherweight champ). And recently, Sacramento's Danny Castillo publicly asked the UFC for a homecoming fight.
But most likely, Benavidez and Mendes will have to wait for their title shots. Most reports believe the UFC is leaning towards newly crowned Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis and T.J. Grant as the other co-main event in Sacramento.
UFC on Fox 9 will take place at Sleep Train Arena on December 14th. Tickets go on sale on October 4th.
