SACRAMENTO, CA - Crews battled a brush fire along the American River late Thursday afternoon.

The fire was located at the American River Parkway, near Cal Expo and a little south of the Costco on Expo Parkway. As the flames consumed 100 acres of heavy brush, the fire produced thick black smoke that could be seen from miles away.

Sacramento Fire Department crews had trouble accessing the fire at first. The fire department sent a helicopter to do water drops as 45 units on the ground fought the blaze. The fire department's resources were low Thursday and got assistance from the Sacramento Metro Fire Department, Elk Grove Fire Department and the West Sacramento Fire Department.

Sacramento Fire Chief Niko King said crews were initially concerned about structures on the north end of the fire. However, as crews got a better handle on the blaze, the structures were no longer in danger.

A California State Fair spokesperson said the smoke from the fire was visible at a distance, but fair goers cannot smell it. The fire has not impacted the fair at this time.

No injuries were reported in connection to the fire.

The fire was contained by Thursday evening.

Sacramento Fire crews remained at the scene throughout the night monitoring hot spots and mopping up the area.
