ELK GROVE, CA - The Elk Grove High School football program has been targeted several times in recent weeks by vandals and Thursday morning was the most devastating blow yet.
The two equipment storage buildings at the school's stadium burned, demolishing the structures and the gear inside, according to a news release sent out by the school's football staff.
The loss was estimated at approximately $60,000, including replacement of the destroyed storage sheds, said junior varsity team representative Rachell Reinwald.
The Cosumnes Fire Department was investigating the cause of the fire, which was believed to have been intentionally set, said Deputy Chief John Michelini..
Football staff also noted the same storage buildings have twice been broken into in the past few weeks. A mini-cart was stolen (but recovered) and hitting bags and other items were slashed. There has been offensive graffiti sprayed on buildings in sight of the football field and the windows were busted out of the stadium's press box earlier this week.
Anyone with information about any of the incidents was urged to call the Elk Grove Police Department tip line at (916) 627-3333.
Additionally, donations to replace the destroyed equipment would be appreciated. Please contact Jack Budmark at (916)479-1473 or emaill Elk Grove High School football.
