RIVERBANK, Calif. - A bicyclist died after being hit by an SUV in Riverbank Monday morning.
Officer Matt Radke of the California Highway Patrol said the cyclist was riding in the northbound lane of Terminal Ave. around 4:35 a.m. when the driver of a Jeep Cherokee struck him.
According to Radke, the cyclist was riding without a helmet, reflective clothing or lighting, making it difficult for the driver to see him until the last minute. The driver applied his brakes but could not stop before hitting the cyclist from behind, causing him to be ejected from the bike onto the dirt shoulder.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced the cyclist deceased.
Radke said the collision was still under investigation and it was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
The cyclist's identity was withheld pending notification of family.
