DIXON, CA - A man was shot and killed by a Vacaville police officer after a high-speed chase Friday afternoon.
A Lincoln MK 8, with a driver and passenger, led police on a chase on city streets, then onto Interstate 80, around 3:26 p.m., California Highway Patrol said. The man and the woman inside were driving away from a Vacaville Walmart in connection to a theft at the store, CHP said.
Police stopped the Lincoln on eastbound I-80, east of Leisure Town Road, where officers exchanged gunshots with the suspects in the car. The driver, Lonnie Taylor, 21, was shot in the chest and the passenger, Elizabeth Ilar, 18, was shot in the hand, city of Vacaville spokesperson Mark Mazzaferro said.
CHP said the Lincoln then sped away from scene down I-80. The car then crashed into the center divider near the Midway Road exit between Dixon and Vacaville. CHP said the car hit a van, which then hit a SUV.
Taylor was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he later died of his injuries. Ilar was arrested after getting treatment for her injuries.
CHP had to all three lanes of eastbound I-80 for an hour as they investigated the shooting. While lanes #2 and #3 were reopened, lane #1 remained close for another hour and a half as crews investigated the crash and cleaned up the scene.
The shooting is being investigated by the Solano County Sheriff's Department and the crash is being investigated by the CHP.
